ArtScape on Main is a community-building project created by
volunteers of the Rice Lake Main Street Association and presented by
CTC Telcom.
ArtScape on Main adds interest and color to the Downtown streetscape
with 28 art banners. The banners, painted by local talent, grace the decorative
light poles for the third time during the spring and summer of 2008. The
colorful banners encourage pedestrians to stroll and traffic to slow.
Showcasing locally created art provides a unique twist on an outdoor gallery
experience.
Rice Lake was the first Main Street community in Wisconsin to initiate an art
banner program. Originally, brainstorming over coffee resulted in a list of 50 potential
artists who were invited to a presentation of the vision for ArtScape on
Main. Twelve people showed up and every single one signed on that night.
They must have been excited and talked to their friends. By the next morning
additional artists were calling or showing up at the Main Street office
wondering if they, too, could paint a banner. The artists range from fifth
grade to retirement age and represent all walks of life. The cooperation,
talent and generosity of the artists is amazing!
The Rice Lake Main Street Association will sell the banners at the end of
the season and repeat the process each year to bring new artwork to Downtown
Rice Lake. If you are interested in more information please contact the
Rice Lake Main Street Association at 715-234-5117.
